Disabled Tulsa Man Continues To Help Others

One of the greatest challenges in life, is making the best of what your abilities.

A great example of that, is a Tulsa man who got a bad break in life and didn't let it stop him.

He was working on a mid-life career change and studying to become psychologist, when he was hit by a brain aneurysm.

Instead of giving up, Marc Cook has continued to do his best to help others.

While he's now disabled, he continues to contribute by teaching classes at The Center For Individuals With Physical Challenges.

He's a lifetime musician who teaches music and other classes.

Marc says it's satisfying, when his students start to make progress on a guitar.

"You teach em a cord and it brightens up a whole new avenue for em.

They say wow!

I can do it!

I like to see it in their eyes.

That makes the whole world brighter for me."

He says he'd advise other people with disabilities, to follow their hearts and refuse to let their bodies slow them down.

The center's Executive Director, Lori  Long, says Marc is a perfect example of what they're trying to accomplish.

He knows his abilities, his strengths and limitations and keeps moving ahead to do something special for others.

She says they couldn't operate without the help of volunteers.

Their work provides a couple of hundred thousand dollars a year worth of value.

For those who are interested, there's a wide range of options.

From providing daily help, to once or twice a year for a special event.

For his work and spirit, Mark Cook was named one of the 2012 Volunteers of the Year, by Volunteer Tulsa.

But what he does, isn't that unusual at the center.

Many who use those facilities, also give back by volunteering.
