Riverdogs fall to Augusta 4-1

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, SC – Matt Duffy (3-5, 2 RBI) led the Augusta GreenJackets to a 4-1 win over the Charleston RiverDogs in South Atlantic League action Friday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park in front of 4,657 fans. The loss moves the RiverDogs into a two way tie for second place in the Southern Division with the GreenJackets. Both teams are now 6-4 this season.

Augusta threatened early after consecutive hits by Travious Relaford and Matt Duffy in the top of the 1st inning. They scored no runs, however, as RiverDogs starting pitcher Vicente Campos caught a line drive off the bat of Mitchell Delfino and threw to third for an inning ending double play.

Campos pitched three innings, allowing no runs on two hits with one strikeout and one walk. He received a no decision and was relieved by Evan Rutckyj. Rutckyj (1-1) picked up the loss as he pitched three and two thirds innings. He allowed four hits, three runs (two earned), and struck out five batters.

In the top of the fourth inning Rutckyj allowed the first run of the game. Delfino led off the inning with a double, advanced to third base on a single by Ben Turner, and scored on a fielders choice.

Manager Al Pedrique was ejected from the game in the bottom of the third inning for arguing balls and strikes after a called third strike on Greg Bird.

Charleston tied the game 1-1 in the top of the fifth inning on a Saxon Butler solo homer, his first of the year.

The GreenJackets regained the lead in the top of the sixth inning. Charles Jones hit a triple and scored after a throwing error from Rob Refsnyder bounced into the stands. They added another run in the top of the seventh on a single by Duffy that scored Andrew Cain extending their lead to 3-1. Augusta added an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning on another Duffy RBI single.

Augusta starting pitcher Kendry Flores (1-0) earned his first win of the season. He went five strong innings, striking out six batters and allowing only one run on three hits. Tyler Mizenko closed the game for the GreenJackets and recorded his second save of the season.
