MT.PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- If you drive down Shem Creek Bridge on Coleman Boulevard, you may notice a large chunk missing.

According to the incident report, officers arrived around 1:45 a.m. Sunday to find a SUV facing the south bound lane of traffic on the sidewalk are of the Shem Creek Bridge.

Police say the SUV had hit a palm tree in the median, lost control and struck the railing of the bridge. The report says about 30 feet of concrete and metal railing detached from the bridge and fell into the creek.

The SUV's driver side tire was "hanging completely off the bridge," swaying back and forth police said.

The driver, 20-year-old Destiny Hetz, told police she lost control of her vehicle and hit a curb. The officer notes he smelled a "strong odor of an alcoholic beverage" coming from Hetz and that her speech was slurred and her eyes bloodshot.

She told the officer that she had "one beer" before the accident. She also refused the field sobriety test and the breathalyzer test at the police station.

Hetz was arrested and charged with driving under the influence.

Mt. Pleasant police spokesman Stan Gragg said the Mount Pleasant Fire Department has put up temporary barriers.

Gragg also said the SC Department of Transportation will be responsible for fixing the bridge and it will be up to them whether they seek restitution from the suspect or their insurance company.
