SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) -- Spartanburg County sheriff's deputies say a man who died suddenly at a hospital had been handcuffed shortly before his death following a scuffle with staff members.
Coroner Rusty Clevenger says 46-year-old Ansel Dewayne Marlar of Inman died Friday night after a scuffle with members of his family and Mary Black Hospital staff.
A report released Monday shows a deputy had handcuffed Marlar shortly before his death. The report says Marlar had hit nurses and security officers before he was handcuffed.
The report says nurses told the deputy that Marlar wanted to be released from the hospital, although medical staff had advised against it.
An autopsy found no sign of traumatic injury. Officials are awaiting toxicology reports on a possible cause of death.
