HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -
The Pennsylvania Senate has approved a bill that would create an online voter registration system in the state.
Senate Bill 37 would allow residents to register to vote, change their party registration, and update their name or address online through a system developed by the Department of State.
Sen. Lloyd Smucker (R-Lancaster/York) said his measure would make it easier to register to vote and would increase participation in elections.
Smucker said about 16 other states already provide online voter registration as an option, and most have reported significant cost savings.
He added that the Department of State has spent more than a year preparing to implement the online voter registration system by working on technical and security-related issues.
The measure now moves to the state House of Representatives for consideration.
