Too Many Inmates At the Tulsa County Jail And Not Enough Space

Posted: Updated:

Too many inmates and not enough space. The Tulsa County Jail has 60 extra prisoners. It's been a problem for about a year now and to get the number down the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office is working on several things.

"We stopped municipal inmates from being booked into the jail," says Major Shannon Clark, TCSO.

Clark says they have also contacted the Department of Correction to collect their inmates within 72 hours. Local prosecutors say this will help.

"You have to start somewhere. So, I think that's a good first step and this issue has been around forever," says Tulsa County First Assistant District Attorney, Doug Drummond.

Drummond says he hasn't seen this many inmates in the jail in sixteen years of being here. He says everyday they have to ask several questions on who should be let out early.

"Where do we send them? How accountable should they be? Are they a public safety threat and who can take them and what resources do we have," says Drummond.

Clark says from last Friday to Monday morning they were able to release 185 inmates. But in that same time 165 new inmates came in. He says they are only letting out the very small cases and it is on a case-by-case basis in front of a judge.

"We had somebody in there for an animal-at-large. We had some incarcerated for driving a vehicle with a bad windshield. We had somebody in there for jaywalking," says Clark.

Clark says they have brought in more deputies on the weekends to patrol the jail to make sure everyone stays safe, but if they can't get the number to stay down, they could be forced to ask for more money.

"If we cannot continue to operate that jail within our revenue stream then we are going to have to go outside and ask for additional revenue to operate that facility," says Clark.
