MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- The Ravenel Bridge is an emblem of the Lowcountry that dominates the Charleston skyline. But passing under it, you get a different view.

"When they built this bridge, they built these granite islands here from the bottom up," said Sgt. Angus MacBride with the S.C. Department of Natural Resources.

MacBride was one of the DNR officers who patrolled before and during the annual Cooper River Bridge Run. They worked with the U.S. Coast Guard, state and local agencies.

"We have people on the bridge. We have people on boats in the water. We're ready to handle whatever comes about," MacBride said.

But the Bridge Run was only one of several events for which authorities had to stay on high alert.

"We have all sorts of things that happen in Charleston harbor and vicinity. We've got fireworks on the 4th of July, regattas and large on-the-water events like Aquapalooza," he said.

Divers with local agencies also worked with the DNR to inspect the bridge pylons. The divers used sonar and metal detectors to look for anything out of the ordinary.

"We don't get too specific with what we're looking for. If something looks out of place, we go investigate," MacBride said.

He said the bridge was strong; engineers built it so one pylon could come down without losing the whole structure. He said Bridge Run participants and spectators should remain vigilant, but ultimately enjoy the day.
