LADSON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Shots were fired near a Dorchester District 2 elementary school early Friday morning, according to a police spokesman.

Officials with the North Charleston Police Department say officers were dispatched to a construction site at 9701 Patriot Boulevard just after 3 a.m. The construction site is located directly across from Joseph Pye Elementary school.

A security officer, Kristopher Verrett, told police he had been shot at.

Police say Verrett told them he was sitting in his security vehicle when a white man walked in his direction. The officer told police he got out of his vehicle to confront the man. He says the man pulled out a weapon and fired a shot.

Our ABCNews4 crew could see the security vehicle and an apparent bullet hole through the windshield.

Officials say the suspect took off from the scene on foot towards Joseph Pye Elementary.

School officials said the principal has taken precautionary measures and put staff members on high alert. There is also an increased presence of police around the school, but officials said there was no sign that the suspect was still in the area.

The suspect is described as a white male, between 5'07" and six feet tall with a skinny build.

The construction company hired Verrett to watch over the site after several thefts including copper wire and a construction vehicle were stolen from the site earlier this month.

The police report says Verrett was unarmed during the incident.

When our ABC News4 crew stopped by Verrett's home, his father answered the door and was unaware that anything had happened. He woke up Verrett but he declined to provide a comment.

Verrett worked for Yale Enforcement Services. Operations Director Tommy Vickers said it is a very rare for something like this to happen.

"We check in with our officers regularly. They are not out there by themselves so we really will just continue to operate."

According to the incident report, a K-9 attempted to locate a suspect but none was found.

The incident remains under investigation.
