Gunther, Bucs take series from Presbyterian with 5-2 on Sunday CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern got seven strong innings from starter Ryan Gunther and Bobby Ison had two doubles to lead the offense as CSU won its Big South series finale against Presbyterian, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon at CSU Ballpark.
The win gives the Bucs the series win over the Blue Hose and improves CSU to 17-23 overall and 7-8 in league play. PC falls to 21-20 and 8-7 in Big South play.
CSU is now 7-2 in Big South play at CSU Ballpark.
Gunther (WP, 5-4) gave up only six hits and walked two for his fifth win of the year. He struck out four and allowed two runs, one earned, in keeping Presbyterian off balance all afternoon.
"That was a quality start today for us by Ryan (Gunther)," CSU head coach Stuart Lake said following the win. "We got two really good starts this weekend that carried us. This was one of those wins that can keep our momentum going into our exam break."
The win was CSU's fifth in seven games and caps an exciting weekend for the Bucs in which they played under their new stadium lights.
The Bucs move into a tie for third in the South Division and took care of business at home with a pair of road series looming following their a week off.
"This is a good time for a break," Lake added. "These guys are tired and need a little bit of a one. With what we went through this weekend with the lights and the excitement, this is kind of a good time for us to get away for a few days."
Charleston Southern will face The Citadel on Tuesday at 3 p.m. before taking eight days off from game action, resuming play with four-straight road games. CSU plays at Georgia Southern (May 1) before traveling to Winthrop for a conference weekend (May 3-5).
The Bucs pieced together enough offense on Sunday to win behind Gunther's second strong home start in as many weekends.
CSU struck first in the second to take a 1-0 lead. Brian Welch drew a one-out walk and moved up on a single by Jaren Sustar. Kevin Hickey would deliver with an RBI single as CSU grabbed a quick lead.
The Bucs added to it in third as Alex Tomasovich and Zack Hagaman led off with back-to-back singles, later scoring on an RBI fielder's choice from Robbie Streett.
PC got its only two runs in the fourth as a throwing error by catcher Drew Woodall helped score Aaron Preston who reached on a leadoff single. The Blue Hose' Brandon Paul would score the second run of the inning, racing home as catcher Robby Swab gave himself up on a steal attempt, but bought enough time for Paul to score from third.
An RBI double from Ison gave the Bucs the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth. He roped a line drive off the wall in right to score Hickey, who had reached with his second single. The Bucs appeared to have taken the lead earlier in the inning, but PC left fielder Brandon Martin climbed the fence in left to take a home run away from Sustar.
CSU capitalized again in the fifth, as Woodall and Chase Shelton led off with back-to-back singles. Woodall would score from second to build the lead to 4-2 as starter Bud Jeter's pickoff attempt to first was low and rolled up the right field line. Brian Welch followed with an RBI single to center to plate Shelton and give CSU a 5-2 edge.
Centerfielder Bobby Ison went 3-for-5 and doubled in two of his first three at bats, while Hickey and Tomasovich each added two hits.
The Buccaneers outhit Presbyterian, 12-7.
Paul led PC with a 2-for-4 effort and had the Blue Hose' lone extra-base hit, a double.
Bucs' reliever Andrew Tomasovich pitched a perfect eighth and Austin Weekley closed things out in the ninth for his sixth save of the year.
