Berkeley man electrocuted at electric substation

Posted: Updated:

CAINHOY, S.C. (WCIV/AP) - Berkeley County officials have discovered a man who was electrocuted at an electric substation in Cainhoy.

Utility workers responding to a power outage found the body late Sunday morning near some transformers behind a fence. Coroner Bill Salisbury says 29-year-old Zachary Jones of Salters was found in a pit around a transformer inside a Berkeley Electric Co-Op substation.

Salisbury says a fence had been cut to gain access to the area. It's not clear why Jones was behind the fence.

According to officials at the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office, approximately 50 pounds of copper was found to be missing from the substation during the death investigation.

The Berkeley County Sheriff's Office is investigating. Officials are also trying to determine if Jones was working with anyone to gain access to the substation.
