NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- A North Charleston neighborhood was blocked off by police after they say a woman was found dead early Tuesday morning.

A spokesperson for the North Charleston Police Department says the woman was found by an officer near Alta Shores Apartments along Elms Plantation Road just before 1 a.m. Tuesday

Residents in the area were not told much by police. One resident said she was forced to walk home because the area was blocked off to traffic.

According to a police report, the woman suffered a gunshot wound to the head and there was a gun lying next to her body.

The coroner's office has said the death is not considered suspicious, but the office is not ready to rule out another manner of death.

The woman's identity has not been released.
