NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- North Charleston police responded to a Sumner Avenue apartment complex for reports of a shooting Monday morning.

According to police reports, officers were called to the Filbin Creek Apartment Complex around 10:15 a.m. because a woman had shot her boyfriend in the parking lot.

Police say as they were on the way to the location, they heard both the victim and suspect were leaving the scene in a gray Acura. The officers pulled them over on North Rhett Ave. south of Sumner.

Officers report the driver, 22-year-old Candace Oniqua Frederick, was driving while her boyfriend was in the passenger seat with a gunshot wound to his leg. POlice say he refused to be transported, however, saying the wound was only a graze.

Police say the victim had "many stories" about what had happened, none of which implicated his girlfriend until he was placed in the back of a patrol car. Police say that's when he told them the couple had gotten into an argument in the apartment and as he left, Frederick said "You ain't gonna leave me like that," before shooting him in the leg.

The victim told police they had only known each other for three days.

Frederick said they were leaving the apartment and for some reason she had a gun in her hand and decided to unload it, the report said. She told police she "racked the gun and must've had her finger on the trigger and didn't realize there was one round in the chamber which accidentally shot the victim."

There was a juvenile present during the shooting. Frederick's parents picked up her child.

Frederick is charged with attempted murder and simple possession. Bond was set at $50,000.
