NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- A North Charleston man was put behind bars Monday but it was just a month ago that he was lying on a kitchen floor, the apparent victim of a shooting.

According to police reports, North Charleston police responded to an apartment complex on Clements Avenue around 11:12 p.m. March 22. A man came out of a second floor unit and brought officers to his kitchen where 26-year-old David Allen Williams, Jr. lay bleeding from his chest.

The report says officers found shell casings and a bullet near Williams' head and feet. Police say Williams would not describe who shot him.

Just one minute later in the same apartment complex, another gunshot victim was found. A witness said the victim knocked on his door saying he had been shot. Police found the victim, 29-year-old Donald Smalls, with a "bullet hole directly in the middle of his lower back." Smalls told police the bullet went through his back and out his stomach.

The report says Smalls told police he was robbed on Spruill Ave. He said a man tried to rob him, pulled a gun and a "brief struggle" took place. He said he didn't know who the suspect was or why he would attack him.

Now, just over a month later, the first victim, David Williams, is charged with attempted murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. Williams was just released from MUSC on April 19. Smalls is still hospitalized.

According to police, but not reflected in either report, an investigation revealed that Small's robbery on Spruill Ave. story was false.

"Detectives learned that the victim located at 1815 Clements Ave (Williams) arrived at the location with another subject with the intent to conduct some type drug transaction," said NCPD spokesman SPencer Pryor. "While at this location, reportedly three black males entered the apartment and an altercation took place between the victim (Williams) and others in the apartment. Moments later, gunfire erupted.  The victim was struck and was later transported to MUSC in critical condition.  The second shooting victim (Smalls) left the location and went to 1819 Clements Avenue."
