Smoking Ban On State Property Approved

Posted: Updated:
Oklahoma City (AP) -

The Oklahoma House approves a bill that puts into state law Gov. Mary Fallin's executive order banning smoking on state property.

Fallin signed the executive order against smoking in state buildings last year.

The House passed a bill 76-14 that would expand the ban to properties that aren't buildings and would allow cities and counties to ban smoking on their properties.

Lawmakers say this bill is more durable than the executive order, which can be changed by a governor at any time.

It's not clear what the penalty will be if someone defied the ban.  The Governor said last year she hoped the ban would be self-enforced.

The bill now goes to the governor for her signature.
