CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP/WCIV) - The major party candidates in the state's 1st Congressional District have busy campaign schedules.

Former Gov. Mark Sanford has appearances set in Charleston and in Berkeley County on Wednesday.

At one stop on Ashley Avenue, the Republican candidate highlighted his differences with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi by using a cardboard cutout to "debate" her. He said that since Colbert Busch wouldn't face him, he'll face off with her biggest donor instead.

Colbert Busch responded, saying she "doesn't have to resort to phony cardboard cutouts to talk with the people of South Carolina."

He said some of the questions he'd like to address with Colbert Busch include the Keystone Pipeline, healthcare, and her stance on the National Labor Relations Board.

Democratic candidate Elizabeth Colbert Busch plans an event in which she announces the formation of a Republicans for Colbert Busch organization. Late Wednesday she holds a campaign rally at Burke High School in Charleston.

The two have agreed to a third joint appearance, however.

The candidates will each speak at an event sponsored by the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce on April 30. The event, dubbed Pork and Politics, gives the members of the Chamber a chance to hear from the two sides.

"It's a great opportunity for our membership to hear the candidates in person before they go to the polls on May 7. This will be one of the few and only times during the month long campaign that both candidates will appear and speak at the save event. We look forward to having a great event and are thankful both candidates will attend," said David Dunlap, Chamber PAC Board Chairman.

The two candidates, along with Green Party Candidate Eugene Platt, are seeking the 1st District congressional seat that was once held by U.S. Sen. Tim Scott.

The special election is May 7.
