5-run fourth inning propels Charleston past Power

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (DOGS) – The Charleston RiverDogs got a timely hit from Greg Bird (1-4, 2 RBI), and continued their dominance over the West Virginia Power Wednesday afternoon with a 6-5 victory in South Atlantic League play at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park in front of 4,958 fans. The win moves the RiverDogs (10-9) above the .500 mark, while the Power (8-12) stay in sixth place in the Northern Division.

Charleston fell behind after allowing three runs in the top half of the fourth, all off of RiverDogs starter Vicente Campos. Campos lasted three plus innings as he allowed three runs on four hits. Lefty Evan Rutckyj (2-2) picked up the win in relief of starter Vicente Campos. Rutckyj threw three innings and gave up a run on two hits and one strikeout.

West Virginia's downfall this season has been their bullpen, and that was the case Wednesday afternoon. Starter Tyler Glasnow lasted 3.1 innings giving up two runs on three hits. He was relieved by David Jagoditsch (0-3) who took the loss after he tossed just a third of an inning with four walks and three runs allowed. After a Cito Culver bases loaded walk tied the game at 3 in the bottom of the 4th, Bird came through with a two-out, two-RBI base hit to give Charleston a 5-3 lead they would not relinquish.

Taylor Garrison got the final out of the 8th inning, and then closed the door on West Virginia in the 9th to earn his 2nd save of the season.

BALLPARK FUN: It was the second and final Education Day at Riley Park for 2013. Thousands of students from Lowcountry schools were in attendance on a beautiful sunny day at The Joe.
