Former CSU cornerback hopes to hear name on draft day

Posted: Updated:

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- He is the best chance Charleston Southern has ever had to hear his name in the NFL Draft. That in itself is more amazing than anything that Charles James has done on the field.

"D1, D1-AA, D3, it can be done. If you're good enough, they'll find you. Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard. If you work hard, you'll be fine," said James, the former CSU cornerback.

He's overcome plenty to make it where he is now.

He still keeps his head up and dominates on the defensive side of the ball.

"I've been down a long tough road. What I can see is I've seen the bottom, now, I'm here. I've accomplished a lot of things," he said.

James has experienced it all: he had no college offers coming out of high school in Jacksonville.  His high school coach died after his senior season and wasn't able to help with his recruiting.  He didn't qualify academically his freshman year, and during that year, was involved in a horrific car accident.

In 2009, then-CSU head coach Jay Mills gave him a chance.

"It all started with him," said James. "He gave me a scholarship in 2009, I'm grateful for that. He gave me a chance to show who I was. I made a legacy and made the foundation for others."

In his time at the school, Charles James has become the most prolific defensive player in Charleston Southern history. He has 12 career interceptions and now, a legitimate shot to make the NFL.

"Some say I'll get drafted, some say I'll be an undrafted free agent. Wherever god puts me, it'll be great," James said.

Scouts seem to like what they see. James has flown to several teams since his pro day at CSU, where he ran a wind-aided 4.5-second 40-yard dash.

"I'm a little bit nervous, a little bit excited. Having a chance to be the first player ever drafted here is big. God blessed me to be able to accomplish my dream to be a professional football player," he said.

But James' hard work and determination didn't hurt.
