BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) -- A car accident involving a tanker truck shut down part of Interstate 26, spilling gas and diesel fuel on the side of the road.

According to South Carolina Highway Patrol, the interstate was closed shortly before 3 a.m. Saturday when a tanker truck carrying gasoline overturned and spilled. The truck driver was taken to Medical University Hospital. The other driver was not injured, officials said.

Highway Patrol officials say the accident happened by exit 191 when the tractor trailer ran into the back of another car, sending both vehicles off the right side of the road.

The tractor trailer was carrying approximately 8,700 gallons of gas and deisel fuel.

SCHP officials said at a briefing that the driver of the tractor trailer has non-life-threatening injuries as of midday Saturday.

Traffic was shut down at mile marker 187 and traffic was rerouted to Highway 78 to Jedburg Road until about 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Cleanup crews used large foam blankets to soak up the oil. The few residents in the area were asked to stay inside and refrain from smoking because of the fumes.

All eastbound lanes are now open.
