Broken Arrow Canine Unit to Receive New Member

Posted: Updated:

Some of Broken Arrow's hardest working canines will be joined by a new team member next year after city officials approved a donation from an animal organization earlier this month.

During a city council meeting back on April 16, a $5,000 donation was approved to purchase a drug detection/service canine for the Broken Arrow Police Department's K-9 unit. The funds were acquired from Dogs Against Drugs, Inc., which aims at "educating our youth on the dangers of drug abuse.

According to the minutes posted on the city's website, the money will be utilized to offset the cost of acquiring a trained canine which typically costs approximately $10,000.00. Acquisition of the canine is proposed for funding in the Fiscal Year 2014 budget.

And back in September of last year, Dogs Against Drugs began dissolving its operations, which meant disbursing remaining resources to worthwhile Oklahoma organizations. The funds donated to BAPD falls within the goals and objectives of the organization.
