Dorchester man convicted of 1984 kidnapping, sex crimes

Posted: Updated:

DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) -- A man was convicted last week for sex crimes and kidnapping in a Summerville bookstore case that dates back to 1984.

According to the Dorchester County Solicitor's Office, 47-year-old Herbert Leroy Holmes was convicted on one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and one county of kidnapping. He was sentenced to 30 years on the criminal sexual conduct and life on the kidnapping charge.

The solicitor's office said the only piece of evidence in the case was a sex assault exam kit that was re-examined in 2009, including a DNA test. Since DNA testing did not exist in 1984, the re-examination of evidence shed new light on the case for state forensics experts.

When the State Law Enforcement Division compared the DNA sample to examples in a national database, they found a match in Holmes, the solicitor's office said.

He was already serving a prison sentence on an unrelated 1989 rape case at the time the DNA tests were performed.
