SPAWAR hosts computer game competition for middle schools

Posted: Updated:

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Fifty area middle schoolers showed their mettle to SPAWAR and Joint Base Charleston representatives during the Tri-County Dimension U competition on Friday.

Dimension U is a computer game, according to SPAWAR, that challenges students with problem solving questions and tests their skills in algebra and pre-algebra.

Students from Gregg Middle, Oakbrook Middle, River Oaks Middle, Hanahan Middle and Cane Bay Middle schools participated in the competition, a SPAWAR release said.

"Most of our outreach takes place in the community," said Chris Miller, Executive Director SSC Atlantic. "This is one of the few times a year where we bring students, their families and educators onto the Joint Base to see the command up-close and how we make IT (Information Technology) count for the Navy every day; we really want to get these students excited about Science and Math and future careers in IT."

This event is part of SPAWAR Atlantic's educational outreach program aimed at developing science, technology, engineering and math skills in primary schools and at universities.

According to officials, Dimension U is funded by the National Defense Education Program, adding that this was SSC Atlantic's second year hosting the competition.
