Federal transportation officials visit the port

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) - Federal transportation officials met Wednesday at the Port of Charleston to discuss ways to make it better.

Included in those talks was Chairman Of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, U.S. Rep. Bill Shuster of Pennsylvania.Shuster and other lawmakers say a federal trust fund could meet much of the nation's harbor deepening needs if more than half its money weren't used for other projects.

Studies are currently under way on a proposed $300 million deepening of the Charleston Harbor shipping channel.

"The return we will get on this investment isn't measurable," Congressman Jim Clyburn said.  "I think that we have to look at every expenditure and make a determination, is this something that will generate something that will benefit the community."
