GEORGETOWN, S.C. (WCIV) -- The scenarios were ones cops could face any day: a hostage situation, a domestic violence incident or a school shooter.

For six years, the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office has used a program called the Firearm Training Simulator. The simulator has about 60 different scenarios from which the operator can choose. Each offered its own challenges, but every one required the officers stayed alert.

"They have to communicate with the scenario and deal with it accordingly," Sgt. Gary Todd said. "When you get out in the real world, it'll help them understand because there is a fine line there between split-second decision making and then it's on you."

During the scenario, the participant acts and responds as the police officer. The director of the scenario decides what to do next, depending on those responses.

"We get to replay the scenario once it's ran through and let the officer see what their shots were and their actions were," Todd said. "It shows you where each round was fired went. It shows how shot places were, so you can look back at it and show them their actions. In a real quick scenario a lot of times, it's going so fast they don't get to see that."

After the replay, the officers get scores.

The system gave tallies for lethal hits, judgment and other categories. Todd said he had meetings with the officers to go over what they could've done better.

He knew in the real world, they don't always get a second chance.
