Flynt to Sanford: 'I will never divorce you'

Posted: Updated:

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (WCIV) -- It appears Larry Flynt's support of former Gov. Mark Sanford's Congressional campaign has not been welcomed with open arms.

In a letter Flynt, the publisher of Hustler magazine, issued publicly to Sanford on Thursday, he said his feelings were hurt when Sanford rejected a campaign donation from Flynt.

"First, you threw your wife overboard. Now you have tossed me aside," he wrote, adding that he would continue to support the former governor. "Nothing can deter me. I came in to save you, like a member of SEAL Team 6."

Flynt issued a YouTube video earlier this week, throwing his support behind Sanford for being "America's great sex pioneer." He offered Sanford $2,600 if he would welcome the magazine publisher to Charleston.

Sanford did not issue a statement on Flynt's endorsement.

Sanford also picked up an endorsement of sorts from extramarital affairs website, AshleyMadison.com in the form of a billboard 25 miles outside of Columbia. The double billboard that went up Monday on Interstate 26 westbound has the former governor grinning and the slogan "Next time use AshleyMadison.com to find your 'running mate.'"

Sanford's camp has not issued statements on either endorsement.

At the same time, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, and state Sen. Larry Grooms also put their support behind Sanford as the campaign heads into the final week.

Sen. Tim Scott, who has largely stayed out of the campaigns to replace him in the House, said on Thursday that Sanford "merits support."

Flynt, in his letter, went after Paul's endorsement, saying, "While you have treated me like you have your former wife, you embrace Sen. Rand Paul and proudly brandish his endorsement. But now the intelligent voters of South Carolina's 1st District are asking whether or not you support Sen. Paul's positions in favor of legalizing marijuana and deploying drones within the United States."

"Is there anyone you wish to target in Hilton Head?" Flynt asked.

Flynt closed his letter vowing his continued support.

"I will never divorce you," he said.
