CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Although it doesn't feel like May, this weekend will still be a great chance to check out some of the local events.

Mother Nature hasn't cranked up the heat just yet, but some kids may be anxious to take that first ride down the water slide this year and they'll get that chance this weekend.

"Starting on Saturday, we'll be opening our three water parks for the first time this season," said Sarah Reynolds, publicity manager with Charleston County Parks. "They will be open weekends only in May through Memorial Day weekend, so starting May 27 they'll be open every day."

Those parks get packed in the summer, but for those not wanting to stand in long lines -- there is no better time than the present.

"May is actually a really great time to come out to the water parks," said Reynolds. "The crowds are down a little bit just because we are gearing up for the hot weather to come, but it's a really great time if you want to take advantage of the smaller crowds."

But with the cooler temperatures and the chance for rain in the forecast, some people may prefer to connect with their creative side at the North Charleston Arts Festival.

"We have over 40 performances in all varieties of entertainment from youth to bands to cultural groups to just general entertainment," said Marty Besancon, North Charleston Cultural Arts Director. "We have arts and crafts booths, an antique show, a fine craft competition statewide, hands-on kid's activities, judged art, judged photography and youth arts competitions."

The event kicked off Friday, but the main events will be this weekend at the Charleston area convention center. Most events will be indoors.

"We do have our food court and one stage. Our band stage is outside and some of the arts and crafts booths, but regardless of the weather we have a wonderful indoor venue where there is lots of things to see and do and have some fun," said Besancon.

So whether it's checking out local art or splashing around at the water park, be sure to get out and enjoy the local festivities this weekend.

The North Charleston Arts Festival continues through May 11 with all kinds of activities around North Charleston. There will be street dances, a mystery dinner theatre, and classes and workshop for both children and adults.

Parking and admission is free.
