Pritcher wins SoCon Pitcher of the Month for 2nd time

Posted: Updated:

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (SOCON) For the second time this season, Citadel senior right hander Austin Pritcher has been named the Southern Conference Pitcher of the Month, adding to the award he earned for February.

Pritcher turned in four quality starts in April and earned two wins and had a pair of no-decisions. In 29 2/3 innings he limited foes to 20 hits (just four for extra bases) and four runs, walked six and struck out 20. He had an ERA of 1.21 for the month, lowering his season mark to 2.40 to take over the SoCon lead in that category, while his opponents' batting average of .227 is also the best in the league.

He had two starts in which he did not allow a run, including a complete game 6-0 shutout of Furman last Friday in which he did not walk a batter and fanned six. He retired the first 11 Paladins, set the side down in order five times and only had multiple runners on base in two innings. For that performance he was chosen the SoCon Pitcher of the Week.

It was the first complete game by a Citadel pitcher this season and Pritcher's second career shutout. He defeated UNC Greensboro 3-0 last April 13.

Pritcher also blanked Georgia Southern over seven innings on April 12 in an 11-0 Citadel victory that launched the team's 10-game winning streak that was snapped on Saturday against Furman.

The graduate of James Island High School was also solid in his two no-decisions during the month. On April 5 against Elon he worked seven innings and gave up three hits and two runs with five strikeouts. Two weeks later he surrendered seven hits and two runs with a pair of strikeouts in The Citadel's 6-3 win over Appalachian State.

Pritcher is 5-2 on the season and is the winningest active pitcher in the SoCon with 19. He also ranks first among current conference hurlers with 293 1/3 innings pitched, second with 211 strikeouts and fourth with a career ERA of 3.80.

He is the only weekend starter in the SoCon who has not allowed a home run this season and has allowed only two round trippers in 26 starts and 170 innings since the beginning of the 2012 campaign.
