SC county's election mess notches $150K legal fees

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - An Election Day voting mess for residents around South Carolina's capital city is costing taxpayers more than $150,000 in legal fees to investigate what went so wrong.

The State newspaper reports that the expenses include fees for a lawyer hired by the Richland County elections board to uncover the web of mistakes that resulted in waits of up to seven hours for voters and a slew of misplaced ballots. The costs also include bills for a lawyer representing then-elections director Lillian McBride. She since has been demoted to a deputy director.

The report into the troubled November elections found the county sent out hundreds fewer voting machines than legally required. Final ballots in Richland County weren't cast until after midnight Election Day.
