Green Party candidate: 'We hoped to win'

Posted: Updated:

JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) – On the eve of the 1st Congressional special election, Eugene Platt enjoys a quiet swing on his front porch on James Island.

"The next 24 hours will be much more relaxed than the previous 24 hours," said Platt, the Green Party candidate. "And, probably the previous 24 days."

Platt says his race has gotten much less attention than his major party opponents, former Gov. Mark Sanford and Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch.

"Although we hoped to win, we knew fairly early that it just was not going to happen because we were not nearly as well financed as the corporate party candidates," Platt said.

Still Platt thought his candidacy would help broaden and educate the public about the principles of the Green Party.

"A lot of people, after every election, say ‘Oh, I wish there had been a block at the bottom with the label none of the above,'" said Platt. "Well in this case, my candidacy is almost like that. If they don't like either the Republican or the Democrat, they can cast a vote for me."

Until a winner is named on Tuesday, Platt says he stands by his political views and hopes South Carolina's next representative keeps every voter in mind.

"One of them will be elected tomorrow. We acknowledge that but, I would just implore whoever wins the election tomorrow to pay more attention to the less fortunate people in our country who have no health insurance," said Platt.

Platt will watch the results at a small dinner with friends.
