Mt. Pleasant police foil armed robbery

Posted: Updated:

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- Mount Pleasant police turned out to be in the right place at the right time to catch a gang of armed robbers in the act.

According to a police report, a patrolling officer saw four black men approach two white men on Coleman Blvd. followed by one of the white men putting his hands up in the air. Realizing a robbery was taking place, the officer says he ran towards them and shouted causing the four black men to scatter.

After a foot chase, the suspects got away but police continued to search for them. Meanwhile the victims told them the suspects were three or four black men in black clothing, one of them armed with a .38-caliber handgun and another one with braids.

Police later said officers recovered the handgun used in the attack.

One of the victims told police the armed suspect shoved the gun into his stomach and said "Give me all you got" so he threw down his wallet and flip-phone. The second victim said he had over $700 in his wallet so he threw it farther away to make the suspects reach for it and that's when the police showed up, saving his wallet from being taken.

One of the victims was taken to MUSC for breathing problems but there were no injuries.

Meanwhile, police continued to look for the suspects. One officer pulled over a speeding Jeep and noticed the driver matched the description of one of the suspects. Police said he had braids in his hair and a pair of used latex gloves on the seat next to him. Police say he told them the gloves were there because he was working on his car earlier in the day.

Officers said they also found marijuana in the vehicle so they arrested the driver, 26-year-old Darren Keith Belt.

Another suspect was found hiding under a dump truck when officers say they saw his feet sticking out. The report says that suspect, 25-year-old Randi Jarrell Parks, was found with the victim's wallet in his pocket.

The last suspect, 31-year-old Ricky Lamont Hayes, ran up to police and told them that he was the victim of a robbery, that two men had run up to him pointing a gun. A backpack with a letter for Hayes was found in the Jeep driven by the first suspect, Darren Belt.
