MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- A Mount Pleasant man was arrested and charged with homicide by child abuse for his alleged role in the death of a 2-year-old left in his care in March.

According to police, Bryan Okeith Seabrook was charged in the child's death after the toddler sustained severe abdominal injuries.

According to a police report, the child was taken to East Cooper Medical Center and pronounced dead a short time later. Seabrook told police the baby had thrown up earlier in the night. He also noticed the child had a locked jaw and did not appear to be breathing.

According to the coroner's office 2-year-old Elijah Washington died of blunt force trauma.

During interviews with the family, police learned that Department of Social Services workers had already been investigating the family which led to the child being placed in protective care of the grandmother.

According to the report, the child's mother had left for a beauty class at Tanger Outlet and was called to come to the hospital because there was something wrong with the baby. By the time the mother arrived, the baby had died, the report states.

In the affidavit, eyewitnesses reported that Seabrook struck the victim shorty before the victim became unresponsive.

Seabrook faced a judge Friday morning. Because of the serious nature of the charge, the magistrate judge could not set bond.  That will have to be done in general sessions court.
