WEST ASHLEY, S.C. (WCIV) -- A toddler was removed from a West Ashley home filled with everything from beers to bugs and empty beer cans. The child's mother and the two people charged with caring for the child have been arrested along with two others.

Charleston police arrested five people total after searching a home on Cross Street in Charleston Wednesday, according to a report and police.

Officers were called to the home after neighbors complained about the well-being and safety of the child living at the home.

Police met with 22-year-old Kirstyn Johnson, the resident of the home, told police that 23-year-old Elizabeth Williams dropped off the 1-year-old child about two months ago and had not returned.

"I think this is just absolutely ridiculous. I mean, (police) are, blowing this thing way out of proportion," said Johnson.

Johnson said Thursday evening that the mother had actually returned on occasion. She said Williams brought diapers and wipes for the baby. Williams added that she was trying to help Williams who was going through a lot in her life.

"She's been going through a lot of things lately and her daughter is somewhere else right now," said Johnson. "When somebody is going through a lot of shit*, they don't want their child to see what they're going through."

Police searched the home Johnson was living in with her boyfriend and the child.

Investigators found a mattress on the living room floor without any covers or blankets, according to a report. In the kitchen, police found open beer bottles and cans, a hypodermic needle without a cover and a razor blade.

"When (police) popped up on me, I was in the process of cleaning my house," said Johnson.

Police say they also found items used for narcotics on the kitchen counter.

"Our old roommate that's just been kicked out, he had a problem with shit and so yes, it happened to still be sitting there," Johnson admitted.

Inside the home, police also found a room that was collapsing and roofing that had separated from the wall, according to a report.

The Department of Social Services was called in and took custody of the child. Williams was arrested and charged with child endangerment.

According to another police report, a search warrant was issued for drug activity in the home that resulted in further arrests.

Johnson was arrested late Thursday and charged with possession of cocaine and heroin. Her boyfriend, 32-year-old John Tabor, was charged with possession of cocaine, heroin and marijuana.

According to CPD spokesperson Charles Francis, two other people have also been arrested in the case. Donald Kinne, 29, and 28-year-old Fallon Stafford were both charged with possession of cocaine and heroin. Francis said they have also been charged with unlawful conduct of a child.

That report lists the discovery of the following:

  • One hypodermic needle in the left front pants of John Tabor
  • 0.2 grams of white substance on a spoon on top of the toilet in the bathroom, field tested for cocaine
  • several small baggies with 0.2 grams of heroin on the kitchen counter
  • one small yellow baggie with 0.2 grams of heroin in the bedroom on a box spring on the floor
  • 1.5 baggies with 0.02 grams of white powder on a desk in a second bedroom
  • one gram of a "loose green plant like substance" on a plate on the kitchen counter
  • a digital scale in the kitchen
  • numerous hypodermic needles on the kitchen counter

The report says when Johnson opened the door to let police in, she ran to the back of the house where Tabor was. Detectives said they found Kinne and Stafford in the first bedroom and that Tabor and Johnson share the second.
