(CofC SID)-

CHARLESTON, S.C.The Citadel used timely hitting and a season-worst five College of Charleston errors to win the second game of the weekend by a score of 7-1 from Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

The Bulldogs (30-21, 17-9) boasted another strong pitching performance to hold the Cougars (26-24, 14-11) to just one run on four hits.

Charleston entered the series as the second-best fielding team in the Southern Conference, but committed a season-worst five errors in the Bulldogs' three scoring innings.

Logan Cribb (4-3) posted another Citadel quality start as he lasted 6.2 IP and gave up just one run on four hits while striking out six. The Cougars did not draw a walk against Cribb or the three Citadel relievers, Zach Sherrill, David Rivera and Skylar Hunter.

Ryan West (4-2) suffered the loss despite a technical quality start, his fifth straight of the season. He went six innings and allowed just three earned runs on seven hits. He had three strikeouts with no walks.

Drew DeKerlegand had two RBI while Bailey Rush tallied two hits for the Bulldogs and an RBI. Joe Jackson scored two runs with one RBI.

College of Charleston's Blake Butler was the lone bright spot offensively, hitting his first career home run in the third inning, CofC's only run of the game.

The Citadel scored two runs in the first inning, taking advantage of a muffed throw from Cody Martin on a bunt attempt by Hughston Armstrong. Joe Jackson knocked an RBI single, and the inning continued when a bad throw on a potential double play got away from West at first base, allowing Jackson to score.

Butler cut the lead to 2-1 with his solo home run in the third inning, but then Cribb went to work at retiring 12 CofC batters in a row from the third to the seventh inning.

In the interim, The Citadel added three runs in the fourth after two straight errors on a ground ball to Bradley Goodson and a misplayed single to Brandon Murray. Rush capitalized with an RBI double and eventually scored on a wild pitch to put the home team up 5-1.

A CofC throwing error in the fifth inning broke up a potential double play and DeKerlegand made the Cougars pay with a two-run base hit up the middle that scored Jackson and Armstrong, giving The Citadel a 7-1 lead.

College of Charleston will look to rebound on Sunday with senior Matt Pegler on the mound against The Citadel's Austin Mason. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. from Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
