Autopsy: Orangeburg inmate died of natural causes

Posted: Updated:

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say an autopsy shows that 1 of 4 inmates who died at the Orangeburg County Detention Center over the past nine months died of natural causes.

The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reported that deputy coroner Sam Fogle says 38-year-old James Ray Parker died Feb. 6 of cardiac problems.

Officials said Parker was being held in a medical watch cell when he rolled or fell out of the bed and started yelling.

Of the three other deaths at the jail since Oct. 31, two have been suicides by hanging and another is under investigation.

Earlier this year, the annual inspection of the detention center found numerous problems with staffing levels, furnishings and operations. The inspection didn't mention the deaths, 2 of which occurred after state evaluators were there.
