NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Charleston County authorities have released the name of a man who died in a backhoe accident in North Charleston.

The coroner's office says 53-year-old Kenneth Louis Drayton of Hollywood was killed in the accident Saturday morning at Sanders Brothers Construction on Harley Street.

North Charleston police say Drayton was operating an excavator when he fell into the hole and dirt fell on him. Drayton was found when a co-worker noticed he was missing and found him covered with dirt.

According to a police report, one of Drayton's coworkers said that large metal plates were put in place for safety and he told Drayton he was going to get a bulldozer and fill the hole.

The coworker said when he made several trips, filling the hole before he noticed that Drayton had not been seen for 30 or 40 minutes.

He dug the hole back up using the excavator and found Drayton's body.

Police are still investigating the accident.
