Man gets 40 years in SC double homicide

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina man will serve the next 40 years in prison after pleading guilty to shooting and killing two Orangeburg women.

The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reports that 28-year-old Vicente Mendoza collapsed Monday during a court hearing in which he pleaded guilty in the shooting deaths last year of 21-year-old Hope Bowers and 37-year-old Latonia Profit.

Mendoza told Circuit Judge Diane Goodstein he was sorry and hates himself for what he did.

Mendoza and Bowers were estranged and had three children together.

At one point during the hearing, Mendoza collapsed onto the floor. The hearing was delayed for about 25 minutes until he could continue.

Mendoza took 1 of the victim's cars. He was arrested in Louisiana about two weeks after the slayings.
