CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Charleston police have confirmed that an Sumter Utility truck fell off a ramp of the Ravenel Bridge into the field below.

According to CPD spokesperson Charles Francis,it happened around 3:30 p.m. at Huger St. and Morrison Dr. He said the boom of the truck hit a SCDOT sign which caused it to fall off the ramp.

Francis says two people were inside the truck and both were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The truck was on the bridge to clean up after an earlier incident.

Around 11:10 a.m., SCE&G crews were pulling a heavy rope across the Ravenel Bridge when the brake mechanism on the rope-pulling machine failed.  When the brakes failed, the tension on the rope was suddenly released and the rope fell into traffic on the Ravenel Bridge.

SCE&G said three street light poles on the bridge were also broken when the rope snapped.

The crew that ended up under the bridge were supposed to be securing the area and repairing the broken street light poles and were contracted by SCE&G.

According to CPD officials, there was no structural damage to the roadway as a result of the accident.

Ronald Anthony Garvin, 38, of James Island, was cited for driving an unsafe vehicle, according to Charleston police. They said he failed to properly secure the boom.
