Mount Pleasant parents urged to voice bus concerns

Posted: Updated:

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) – The Jennie Moore Elementary Improvement Council sent letters to parents Wednesday urging them to let their voices be heard about school buses.

"The intent of the School Improvement Council is to improve the educational experience of our children. The experience begins with a safe, on-time delivery to school in a school bus. Jennie Moore and all of Charleston County Schools, have had continual difficulty with our buses this year," the letter states.

The SIC provided a template letter which says, "Please take the necessary action to reinstate the $35 million that was allocated in the 2007 legislature session. My child deserves safe and reliable transportation to and from Jennie Moore Elementary!"

Parents are asked to forward the letter to Superintendent Mick Zais, Raymond Cleary, of District 34, and Michael Sottile, of District 112.

"We just want our children to be provided a safe environment and pat of that safe environment is the way that they get to and from school and how they get to school sort of sets the tone for their day," Jill Handegan, chair of Jennie Moore's SIC, said.

The letter is a grassroots effort and was authored by a SIC member at Pinckney Elementary.

Zais has been asking for $46 million. He recently asked for the $27 million surplus of lottery money to be put towards new buses.
