Academic Magnet captures the girls 2A state soccer title

Posted: Updated:

GILBERT, S.C. (WCIV) -- The Academic Magnet girls soccer team are state champions once again. This following a 2-1 win over Christ Church in a game that was decided on penalty kicks.

Megan Reed's penalty kick goal clinched the Raptors' second title in three years under head coach Anna Merriman.

"I am so proud of my girls for not giving up," said a jubilant Anna Merriman. "We haven't won a single game on penalty kicks all year and we have been practicing, and practicing penalty kicks all year so we could hopefully win in the end if we had to."

The end almost came in regulation for the Raptors until the 78th minute when senior Kallie Peurifoy tied the game at 1, sending it into overtime. Following a series of scoreless overtime sessions, it was Megan Reed who sent Academic Magnet home state champions.

"I'm so proud of the kids for not saying let's just pack it up and go home," said Merriman. "It really speaks to the mental toughness we have been preaching all year."
