7.5% rate increase proposed for Mt. Pleasant water customers

Posted: Updated:

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- The Mount Pleasant Waterworks is seeking a 7.5 percent increase in water and wastewater facility charges, as well as several other changes which will be discussed at a workshop Monday evening.

A public hearing has been scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on June 3 at the MPW Operations Center.

The utility is seeking to end the $3 Highway 17 special assessment at the end of June, to increase by 7.5 percent the basic facility charges and adjust several other ancillary charges, a release from MPW states.

According to the utility, the typical monthly increase for most customers who use 5,000 gallons of water will be $4.07. Residential customers will likely see a $1 increase, MPW said. The increase is scheduled to take effect after June 30.

MPW says the rate increases are needed to fund improvements.
