CSU's Swan wins 63rd Annual Charleston City Amateur

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) - Jarrett Swan picked up top honors at the 63rd Annual Charleston City Amateur golf tournament on Sunday afternoon at the Municipal Golf Course, edging Matt Laydon on the second hole of the sudden-death playoff to take home top honors in his first action of the summer season.

Swan and Layden both finished the tournament with the top overall scores, finishing regulation with matching 8-under-par scores for a cumulative score of 208, before the playoff determined the champion.

"I'm really proud of Jarrett and his performance this weekend," commented Director of Golf Mike Wilson. "He had a lot of pressure there on the back nine with Laydon really starting to play well and Jarrett handled himself well, hitting the ball really close on several holes, but just couldn't get the putts to fall. He ended up in a playoff in front of about 80 people and hit a great 3-wood into number two and had an awesome up and down to win."

Swan, who recently finished his sophomore season at Charleston Southern University and placed 15th at the 2013 Big South Conference Championships, led the tournament from start to finish, holding a three-stroke lead over Laydon heading into the tournament's final day.

The Mount Pleasant, S.C., native shot the low round of the tournament in the first round in building the early lead, carding a first round 67, 5-under-par on the course affectionately known as "The Muni", to those in the area.

The early 67 allowed him to establish a one-stroke lead over Layden after the first day's action and Swan continued to keep up his steady play on day two with a 70 in building the three-stroke lead following his opponent's 72.

Swan played the entire second round bogey-free in increasing his lead over the field. The rising junior went on an incredible stretch of 26 consecutive holes without a bogey after dropping a stroke on the 17th hole of the first round. His bogey-free run lasted until the ninth hole on day three of the tournament, which allowed Layden to finally build up momentum to cut into Swan's lead.

In a battle that went neck-and-neck on the final day, Laydon demonstrated why he is the defending South Carolina Match Play Champion, recording four birdies on the back nine to force a playoff after both players finished regulation 8-under-par with a cumulative score of 208.

With the score even after the first playoff hole, Swan birdied the second hole of the sudden-death playoff to capture the tournament crown.

"Jarrett's been working really hard at his game this year," said Wilson about Swan's performance. "He was close to winning the Charleston Shootout at the Links at Stono Ferry hosted by the College of Charleston, and I think that's when he realized his level of play is there to where he can win. I'm just really proud of him and he's been working really hard and it's starting to pay off."

CSU teammate Ross Thomson was also in action for the Buccaneers in the tournament, finishing with a score of 214, 2-under-par for the course in finishing tied for third overall, while winning the First Flight Championship.

Thomson surged on the final day, recording a 31 on the back nine to tie with Matt Metz, David Foster and Frank Ford III.

Jason Clatworthy was also in the field, representing the Buccaneers, and finished with round scores of 76-73-78 to finish with a 227 cumulative score, tying for eighth in the Second Flight.

Charleston Southern will have golfers in both the 38th Palmetto Amateur and the 41st Rice Planters Amateur taking place in the month of June.

Thomson will be taking on the field at the Palmetto Amateur, which will be played at the historic Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, S.C. from June 5-8.

The 41st Rice Planters Amateur will be held from June 19-22 at Snee Farm in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. with Swan, Thomson and Choo Teck Ng entering the field.
