(Riverdogs PR)-

SAVANNAH, GA – Savannah starter Gabriel Ynoa tossed six shutout frames of two hit ball as the Sand Gnats knocked off the Charleston RiverDogs 5-2 Monday evening at Historic Grayson Stadium in South Atlantic League action.

With the loss, the RiverDogs drop to 24-17 overall and fall a half game behind the Sand Gnats for second place in the Southern Division standings. With the win, Savannah improves to 25-17 and moves into first place in the Southern Division standings.

Ynoa (5-2) was electric for six innings as he allowed only two hits and two walks and took his strikeout total to 44 on the year with seven strikeouts on the evening. Ynoa was relieved by Paul Sewald who threw scoreless seventh and eighth innings before he allowed the only two runs of the game for Charleston in the ninth. Bret Mitchell came in with one out in the top of the ninth and struckout Yeicok Calderon and Fu-Lin Kuo to end the game and collect his eighth save of the season for Savannah.

Offensively for the Sand Gnats, they were able to get on the board with a RBI single by Cole Frenzel in the fourth inning which scored Kevin Plawecki. Stefan Sabol tried scoring from second but was thrown out at home by centerfielder Jake Cave.

Savannah scored two more runs in the fifth after back-to-back singles by Jeff Reynolds and Phillips Evans. Both scored on a costly throwing error by RiverDogs starter Cesar Vargas. Savannah tacked on another run in the sixth to put the game out of reach on a solo homer by Frenzel who finished the game going 2-for-3 with a single, homer and two RBI's.

RiverDogs starter Cesar Vargas (1-2) took the loss as he tossed five innings and allowed three runs, one earned on six hits and two strikeouts. Vargas was relieved by Adam Smith who allowed a homer in his first inning of work. Smith's final line was two innings and he allowed two runs on two hits and struckout one. Brett Gerritse relieved Smith and pitched a perfect eighth.

The RiverDogs offense never got into the swing of things as Gabriel Ynoa had them on lockdown. Leading the charge for Charleston was Dante Bichette, Jr. who went 2-3 with two singles and a walk, and Kelvin De Leon who went 2-4 and drove in a pair in the ninth inning.

Game two of this three game series in Savannah is scheduled for 7:05pm Tuesday at Historic Grayson Stadium. Charleston sends their ace RHP Rafael De Paula (4-2, 2.75 ERA) to the mound and Savannah will counter with LHP Steven Matz (2-1, 2.83 ERA).
