CSU shutout 4-0 by Campbell in tournament opener

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Campbell starter Ryan Mattes held the Bucs to six hits as the top-seeded Camels beat Charleston Southern, 4-0, in their Big South Baseball Tournament opener on Tuesday evening.

The Bucs will face the loser of tonight's No. 4 Radford and No. 5 Liberty matchup at noon on Wednesday at Liberty Stadium. The Bucs won the season series with Radford two weeks ago, but were swept by Liberty in mid-March.

The Camels gave Mattes enough offense to work with early, stringing together three singles in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead and adding an insurance run in the middle innings.

"Campbell) showed why they're record is what it is," CSU head coach Stuart Lake said following the game. "They took advantage of every opportunity they had and manufactured runs very well."

Mattes (WP, 8-3) struck out four and pitched out of his lone jam of the game with a double play in the fourth to get the complete-game win for the Camels.

"He just proved his numbers were legitimate," Lake said of the Camels' starter. "He's a very good pitcher and came out and did his job. We'll have to come out ready to play and compete tomorrow. We couldn't get (Schroff) that big hit and had a big double play that hurt us."

CSU starter Tory Schroff walked three and struck out three, falling to 6-5 on the year. He gave up nine hits in five and two-thirds innings of work.

Campbell jumped on the Bucs in the second as Elijah Trail singled and scored to give the Camels a 1-0. CU had three singles in the inning to jump to a 2-0. Michael Delucia tripled and scored in the sixth to score the game's final run.

CSU put two runners on in the fourth as John Faircloth and Chase Shelton both singled, but Mattes induced a double play to end the Bucs' threat.
