Local Red Cross deploys 3 volunteers to Oklahoma

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — The Lowcountry Red Cross confirms three volunteers from our region headed to Oklahoma to help with relief efforts after Monday's deadly tornado.

While that may not seem like a lot, every little bits helps. Locally, volunteers and vehicles are on standby as more deployments are expected.

During Superstorm Sandy, the Palmetto region of the Red Cross, which includes seven chapters statewide, sent more than 140 volunteers to help with relief efforts in New York and surrounding areas.

This time, of course, is no different. Shortly after Monday's deadly tornado, the Red Cross deployed almost 30 emergency response vehicles to distribute food, water and relief supplies.

"Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families of these tornadoes. We are very busy here locally in South Carolina getting volunteers ready to deploy," said Louise Welch Williams, CEO of the Palmetto Region of the Red Cross. "The important think to know is the Red Cross will be there as long as these people need us."

To continue helping those in need, the Red Cross relies heavily on donations. To donate, contact the Red Cross at 1-800-REDCROSS. You can also text the word "REDCROSS" TO 90999 and make a 10 dollar donation.

Any time there's a disaster, there's always a need for blood. On May 30, the Lowcountry Red Cross in conjunction with several media partners including ABC News 4, will host a blood drive from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The blood drive will take part at Northwoods Mall in North Charleston as well as Citadel Mall in West Ashley.
