Deputies: Traffic stop leads to 15 drug arrests

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) -- Agents with the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office's Drug Enforcement Unit arrested two men on Friday during a traffic stop after deputies found cocaine inside of a truck.

As a result of the traffic stop, 15 more people were arrested on drug charges ranging from simple possession of marijuana to trafficking cocaine base, officials said.

According to a release Saturday evening, there were 11 arrests for simple possession of marijuana, 1 for driving with an unlawful alcohol concentration, 1 for driving under suspension and 2 for possession with intent to distribute cocaine, possession with intent to distribute marijuana and trafficking cocaine base.

Agents said they stopped the truck near Mudville Road and Highway 27 in Ridgeville as part of a routine traffic stop and smelled marijuana. The truck was being driven by Jonathan Shawn Platt, 23, of Gaston, agents said. Agents then found a rolled up marijuana cigarette on the passenger, Josh Way McKnight, 25, of Holly Hill, according to reports.

The agents also found 16 grams of cocaine base, three grams of cocaine and 60 grams of marijuana inside the vehicle.

The men were charged with possession with intent to distribute cocaine, trafficking cocaine base, and possession with intent to distribute marijuana and taken to the Hill-Finklea Detention Center.

McKnight's bail was set at $60,000; Platt's was set at $30,000.

Berkeley County Sheriff Wayne DeWitt stressed that the enforcement of laws concerning illegal drug activity in Berkeley County continue to be a top priority with this office.
