Hilton Head balks at $1 million sailing center

Posted: Updated:

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - Hilton Head Island Town Council no longer supports building a sailing and rowing center on the island after the cost of the facility increased by about 30% to nearly $1 million.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports that council members approved $700,000 for the center that would have a floating dock that could be used for fishing, crabbing or launching boats.

But town employees underestimated how much a dock would cost, sending the proposal to at least a $950,000 project.

Hilton Head Island Public Projects Director Scott Liggett says the town never built a dock before.

Council members suggested they could still support the project if private money could be found to pay some of the costs.
