MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- Men, women and children gathered at Patriots Point Monday to honor their family and friends who died in combat.

People lined up to speak at the podium; through sobs and tears, they told stories of their friends and relatives who died while serving in the U.S. military.

For Kenneth Graham, Memorial Day has a face.

His brother Earl died in 1965 while serving in Vietnam and during the civil rights struggle. But through it, Earl left a legacy that his brother remembers not just on Memorial Day but every day.

"Having met Earl and some of his friends, whether they be black or white, there was camaraderie and a bond there that I wish that I could share and I strive to share with my friends to this very day," Graham said.

It was a sentiment echoed by veterans themselves on a day that made grown men cry as they thought about those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

"A month later he had a machine gun through the chest. I am sorry Marines aren't that tough I guess, but there's that camaraderie," said one veteran through tears while speaking to the crowd.

"Any chance I get to stop and speak to a veteran, especially one I see with a Vietnam ribbon on or a ball cap, I just stop, shake their hands and say, ‘Hey, listen, I'm family as well,'" Graham said.

His heart was full, he said.

And he was proud as ever of his brother, his comrades and those who served our country.
