WEST ASHLEY, S.C. (WCIV) -- North Charleston police have a man in custody after a police chase that ended in West Ashley -- but he's not the man they thought they were chasing.
According to police, the chase began shortly before 2 p.m. on Spruill Avenue when patrol officers spotted a man they thought was wanted in an attempted murder case. The officers tried to stop the man, later identified as 52-year-old Peter Jenkins, but he led police on a chase that ended near Citadel Mall.
After Jenkins stopped, police learned he was not the man they were seeking, officials said. But Jenkins has been charged with driving under suspicion and failure to stop for blue lights.
North Charleston police said Jenkins was also involved in an assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature investigation after he allegedly tried to run over a woman with the car he was driving Tuesday.
According to a Charleston Police Department report, Jenkins was involved in a hit-and-run at the intersection of Ashley Hall Road and North Woodmere Drive.
Charleston County Sheriff's deputies and City of Charleston officers assisted in the chase, according to officials.
No one was injured.
