SC panel meets amid military base closure concerns

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The South Carolina state task force formed to support its military bases is meeting amid concerns Pentagon budget cuts could take a swipe at military installations in the region.

Members of the Military Base Task Force scheduled to meet Wednesday have said the state's military communities should prepare for another round of base closures that could come by 2015.

While the state won new missions during the last round in 2005, they advise it might not be so lucky the next time.

Last year, state figures show the U.S. military pumped nearly $16 billion into South Carolina's economy. Installations in Beaufort, Charleston, Columbia and Sumter also support about 140,000 uniformed and civilian jobs.
