CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Charleston City Council has approved a new ordinance regulating the city's nightlife, although it's not as strict as one first proposed.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports it requires that nightspots monitor their parking lots so they don't become gathering places. The wording in an earlier version would have required them to patrol those lots.

The ordinance also requires nightspots to keep the sidewalks from being blocked by patrons. That's less restrictive than the earlier version which business owners said would require them to act as police in monitoring sidewalks. Also, any business where music is being played must close their doors and windows by 11 p.m.

The ordinance comes as city officials become increasingly concerned about unruly crowds in entertainment areas downtown.
