Affidavit: School of the Arts theatre manager confesses to having sex with student

Posted: Updated:

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- A Charleston County School of the Arts teacher was arrested Thursday for allegedly having inappropriate contact with a 16-year-old female student.

Charleston County School District Officials said the teacher was placed on administrative leave. Police charged Barnwell with first-degree criminal sexual conduct.

"Providing a safe and secure learning environment for all our students continues to be our top priority," the district said in a statement, deferring further questions to North Charleston police, who are investigating the incident.

A North Charleston police report identified the teacher as 30-year-old Carl Barnwell Jr., of Charleston. The report states that a parent contacted school officials after gathering letters between her daughter and a friend that discussed an alleged affair with Barnwell.

The school's website identifies Barnwell as the theatre manager.

The investigating detective referred the girl and her parents to the Lowcountry Children's Center after interviewing them and reading the letters, the report states.

The report does not detail what interactions the letters alluded to, however.

According to court documents the victim allegedly had sex with Barnwell Jr. once a week since December 2012. Two of those incidents reportedly happened in the "upstairs area" of the school theatre.

Court documents also said Barnwell confessed to having sex with the girl on school grounds.

Barnwell was given a $50,000 bond Friday morning.
